CHAPTER EIGHT

Hand in hand, Jack walked to the bedroom with Gabriel. He felt awful for giving the man such a scare, and even worse because he figured he knew who hadn’t been so kind to Gabe in the past about his imagination and why he didn’t like to read or watch scary things.

The bedside lamp cast a soft glow on rumpled sheets. The air-conditioning kicked on with a faint hum. Gabe put the baseball bat in the closet and then turned to Jack with his hand outstretched.

Palm met palm, and Jack drew Gabe into his arms. He trailed his lips over Gabe’s neck, raising goosebumps. Gabe shivered and pulled him closer and nudged his nose against Jack’s cheek until their lips met. Jack poured all of the passion, all of the promise he’d made to take care of Gabriel, into that kiss. When he drew back, he nodded toward the bed. “Lay down on your stomach.”

Brow raised, Gabe stretched out in the center of the mattress and tucked a pillow under his head. Jack took a moment to admire the play of light over the dips and planes of toned muscles, then he straddled Gabe’s waist and placed his hands on Gabe’s bare back. Massaging his way across the shoulders and neck and upper back, he took his time, reveling in Gabe’s every contented sigh as tension released. He scooted back a few inches and continued the massage across the mid and low back, alternately digging in with his thumbs and pressing in with his palms. “This is what I wanted to do that day at the bakery when you were rushing to complete the re-do of the wedding cake. The little massage I managed to get in wasn’t enough.”

“It helped me.” Gabe turned his head and adjusted his pillow. “This feels amazing. It’s probably good that you didn’t do all of this then. I would’ve either melted into a puddle or dragged you off someplace to take things to the next level. Either way, we would’ve missed the deadline.”

“The next level, hmm?” He grinned, amused and aroused. “Is that code for sex?”

Reaching underneath himself, Gabe grunted. “You know it is. I’m already more than halfway hard. Like you said that day, your hands are good for more than just writing.”

That reminder had so many ideas sparking to life… all of them starring Gabriel. “Have you ever had sex at a bakery?”

“No. But I can’t say that I haven’t thought about it.”

“Would you?”

Twisting, he raised himself onto one elbow and met Jack’s gaze. His eyes glittered like a sparkling sea, invited him to dive in and stay. “If I had the right muse.”

“If that’s an invitation… I’m there.” Jack shifted forward, placing his hands on the mattress at either side of Gabriel’s shoulders and pressed a kiss to Gabriel’s waiting lips. “Speaking of muses… He walks in beauty like the night, of cloudless climes and starry skies; and all that’s best of dark and bright, meet in his aspect and his eyes; thus mellowed to that tender light which heaven to gaudy day denies.
